My project examines individuality and conformity in the area of artificial intelligence. I got the idea when using Google’s new drawing tool (‚Autodraw‘) wich uses artificial intelligence to create a perfect illustation from a sketch. The illustrations generated by the software made me think of how individuality and imperfection become lost and how endless variation become standardized. Then I asked a group of people to use the software to draw four objects (a tree, a house, a bicycle and a circle). These drawings made me realize that there are two facets to individuality. As well as the variation in what a person has in mind before starting to draw (for example a different idea how a tree looks like), there is also variation in motor skill, for example when I let people draw a circle, everyone has the same picture in head but it gets different in the drawing process. The idea that a person’s individuality creates endless possibilities is very moving for me, so I decided to illustrate this with animated posters. Conformity by contrast, seems rigid and dull and a fixed poster is used here. I illustrate how each single drawing is exiting and engaging when compared with the conformity generated by the software.
